Baltimore Comic*Con - We will be back with 'StarHenge: A Kiss for Atticus'...
A few things became very clear this weekend in Baltimore. The main one was that people really love StarHenge! If I had any doubts at all then they were put to rest over the three days of the convention. I signed more copies of that book than anything else, with Batman:Reptilian coming second, Batman Catwoman third, and Wonder Woman and GL about the same after that. But it wasn't so much the number of issues I signed, but rather the enthusiasm and delight for it readers expressed, without exception. Amber and Daryl have really grown to be beloved characters, which I'm delighted about! And the other big point they noted was that it was a much more fun, entertaining and humorous read than they expected. Quite a few said that they felt it would be a heavy, ponderous title, and were delighted when that proved not to be the case.
So yes, HUGE thanks for that! This book will be back with 'StarHenge: A Kiss for Atticus' (tentative Book 2 title) as soon as I can get to it.
The second surprising thing was discovering that if I ever had doubts about my online reach then the fact that pretty much EVERYBODY - fan and pro alike - seemed to know we were moving back to the UK soon put paid to that! The number of people who opened conversations with that knowledge was startling. Clearly a lot more people lurk without liking or commenting than I could have guessed, which can only be a good thing!
When I started on The Green Lantern a few other pros sent me private messages saying 'welcome to being asked "what's it like working with Grant Morrison?" for the rest of your life. Uhm. Yeah. THAT'S definitely a thing! Thankfully I'm always more than happy to share the fact that it was delightful, and I don't mind saying that until hell freezes over!
To wrap up, I just have to say - what a wonderful, old-school, comics first con the show is. So many old friends, such delightful company, and I sold more art than I have ever sold in my entire life in one go (thank you Albert and Devyn Moy!) It seems collectors are getting over the sheer vastness of my pages, and are starting to appreciate it! Why not have a huge piece alongside all the rest? It breaks things up, and makes for a bit of a statement when you see them in the flesh, with all the crazy detail I put in. It definitely still feels like my star is on the rise with art collectors, which is very heartening! The reality is, it's not just about the quality of the art, it's about whether you are perceived as 'relevant' or important in some way within the industry, OR just a straight-up superstar hot artist. That will forever be the real litmus test ultimately!
Thanks again to the comic fans and the show organizers. What an amazing event! I hope to be able to do the show again one day, some time down the line.
Have a great week all!
